Rewards and benefits

We offer all our colleagues a range of benefits.

Our colleague rewards and benefits

Not only do you get a great deal from the day you join, but as you develop your career with us, you’ll qualify for even more rewards.

Annual bonus

We operate a number of discretionary bonus schemes that are role specific. The rules, eligibility criteria and targets are communicated annually. As you progress your career with us, there will be the opportunity for additional rewards, plus for our senior leaders we have a unique long-term incentive scheme.

Colleague discount card

One of the great things about working for us is that once you’ve worked with us for 4 weeks, you’ll be able to start saving 10% off your shopping online and in-store at Sainsbury’s, Argos and Habitat. We’ll automatically send you two discount cards as you may also nominate a second user.

Every Sainsbury’s pay day we will increase the discount at Sainsbury’s and Argos as an additional benefit, so you’ll be able to save even more on your shopping.

Pension

Pension is an important part of our total reward package and a great way to help you to plan for the future. We’ll automatically enrol you onto our pension scheme, and we’ll give you free life cover, equating to a year’s pay. If you choose to pay more with Step Up contributions, then your pension and life cover increases. Visit www.jspensions.com to find out more.

Holidays

We offer paid holiday entitlement that grows as your career does as well as a holiday buying scheme which gives you the opportunity to add to your standard contractual allowance.

Car

Depending on the level of your role, you may be eligible for a company car or cash allowance. Some field based colleagues may attract a business needs car.

Love it

Love it is the home of a range of extra benefits where you can save money on everyday purchases and take advantage of exclusion discounts and savings at over a thousand retailers, including restaurants, cinemas and retail stores. It is also where we cheer on the progress of our colleagues and the platform is designed to celebrate the fantastic work of our colleagues who’ve gone the extra mile and live our values every day.

Long service

Recognising our colleagues’ long service is an important way of cheering on progress. We have a variety of ways of doing this, depending upon your length of service.

Sharesave scheme

Each year, we invite all colleagues to join our Sharesave scheme, and as long as you've been with us for three months, you'll be eligible to join. Sharesave is a savings plan that allows you to buy Sainsbury’s shares at a discounted share price. You can save anything from £5 to £250 every 4 weeks from your post-tax pay, for three years. After three years, you can either take back the money you’ve saved or you can use your savings to buy Sainsbury’s shares at a discounted price.

Sainsbury’s share purchase plan (SSPP)

Once you’ve completed twelve months’ continuous service, you’ll be able to join our Share Purchase Plan. This plan enables you to buy Sainsbury’s shares from your pre-tax salary which remain tax free if they are held for at least five years. You can contribute between £8 and £115 (capped at 10% of your salary) each pay period from your pre-tax salary and you can change the amount you invest at any time.

Season ticket loans

We know how much it can cost to purchase a public transport season ticket for travelling to work, so once you’ve passed your probationary period you can request an interest-free loan. This means instead of you having to pay the full cost up-front or paying more expensive daily and monthly travel costs, Sainsbury’s will give you a loan to buy your season ticket and you’ll pay us back directly from your net salary over six or twelve pay periods, helping you to spread the cost.

Cycle to work scheme

Our Cycle to Work scheme gives you the opportunity to hire a new bike and cycling equipment. This is a salary sacrifice scheme and you pay for the hire through a reduction in your pre-tax salary, meaning you can save money on tax and national insurance. Sainsbury’s also pass on a 10% discount, up to £100, meaning you’ll save on the total cost of the bike.

Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)

The wellbeing of all our colleagues is really important to us, so we have an Employee Assistance Programme. The service is confidential and free of charge to all colleagues who may need short term support such as counselling, legal advice, or debt advice.

Family-friendly

We want to support colleagues taking time out to have a family. In addition to statutory shared parental leave, our enhanced leave policies mean that once you have 1 year’s continuous service (15 weeks before the baby is due) you can take 26 weeks of paid maternity leave*, followed by a further 13 weeks at the statutory rate of pay. We offer 4 weeks fully paid paternity leave* once you’ve worked with us for a year (15 weeks before the baby is due). We also offer a variety of flexible working options to help our colleagues to balance their home and work commitments. *Conditions apply.
