What dog insurance should I get?

With Sainsbury’s Bank Pet Insurance, you can choose from time limited, maximum benefit or lifetime cover. The type of cover – and the amount you want cover for – will depend on your personal circumstances and your dog’s needs.

Lifetime

Our most comprehensive offering. Your dog will be covered for total vet costs of up to £2,500, £5,000, £7,500 or £10,000 per year, depending on what cover you choose.

We’ll pay out for ongoing issues your dog may have throughout its lifetime – for as long as you’re with us.

If your dog already has a medical condition, you can still take out lifetime cover with us.

Maximum benefit

Your dog will be covered for accidents, illnesses and conditions up to your chosen policy cover limit – £3,000 or £6,000

Your dog’s condition will simply be covered until the limit runs out and you reach the maximum benefit.

Subject to the condition limit, as long as you renew each year without a break in cover, the illness, injury or condition will continue to be covered.

Time limited

You can make claims for different treatments during the year, up to £3,000.

We'll pay up to the individual limit for each condition, or for up to 12 months from start of treatment – whichever comes first.

After this, you’ll need to pay for any ongoing treatment your dog needs yourself.

It’s more suitable for short-term health conditions.

What isn’t covered by dog insurance?

Like most dog insurance plans, there are some things that aren’t covered by policies, including:

  • Routine and preventative care like worming or flea treatments
  • Pre-existing illnesses, symptoms or injuries
  • Injuries or poisonings sustained within the first three days of your policy
  • Illnesses diagnosed within the first 14 days
  • Selected breeds of dog

What to consider when buying dog insurance

When looking for a dog insurance quote, there are a few important factors to consider.

•    How old your dog is
•    The breed of your dog – we are unable to insure certain breeds and can’t offer our £10,000 Lifetime Cover on selected breeds
•    Any pre-existing health conditions
•    The behavioural history of your dog
•    Whether you’re considering buying a new dog – we offer multi-pet policies that may work for you

Once you’ve considered this information and provided it to us, we can help find the right policy for you.

Frequently asked questions

What age can my dog be insured?

You can take out a policy with us as soon as your dog is eight weeks old. If you’re looking for pet insurance for an older dog, you can usually start a new policy up until their eighth birthday. Please note that for some breeds, the upper limit is their fifth birthday.

Don’t worry, you can continue to cover your dog up to any age, as long as you keep renewing your policy every year without a break. It doesn’t matter when you start your cover or what type of cover you choose.

How much is dog insurance?

Many factors go into deciding the price of insurance, so it’s hard to say. It depends on your dog’s breed and age, as well as where you live, and the type of policy you choose. The best thing to do is get a quote to see how much it might cost.

Is dental work covered?

Yes – if it’s because of an illness or injury. We don't cover dental crowns, root canals or fillings. It’s important to make sure your dog has dental check-ups with your vet and that you follow their advice.

What is Vet Assistance?

It’s our 24/7 vet advice helpline. You’ll be able to speak to a qualified vet nurse at any time of the day or night to discuss any concerns you have about your dog’s health. Use it whenever you need it, our vet team will be happy to help.

Is there anything you don't cover?

  • Symptoms, illnesses or injuries that your dog had before you took out a policy
  • Routine or preventative treatments
  • Any illnesses diagnosed within the first 14 days of your policy
  • Any injuries or poisoning in the first three days
  • There are also certain breeds opens in new window we’re unable to insure, and some we can’t cover under our £10,000 Lifetime Cover
