How to choose the right cat for you
Shorthair or Siamese? Pedigree or moggie? When you’re searching for the perfect pet cat, one of the first things you need to do is decide which type is right for you.
But with so many cute kitties to choose from, that’s easier said than done. To help you make up your mind, we’ve scratched beneath the surface to create this comprehensive cat guide.
What type of cat should you get?
Moggie or pedigree?
Deciding whether you want a pedigree or non-pedigree is something you’ll need to consider when it comes to choosing your cat. The majority of cats are non-pedigree or crossbreeds, affectionately known as moggies. Non-pedigree cats often live longer than pedigrees, as crossbreeding can reduce genetic health problems.
Pedigree (or purebred) cats are bred to retain certain distinct characteristics specific to the breed. This can be anything from the colour and type of their coat, to their personality traits.
Kitten or adult cat?
There’s no doubt about it – kittens are super cute. But they’re also bundles of endless energy that require a lot of time and effort.
If you’ve got the time and patience to devote to a new kitten, and ensure they develop into a happy and social cat, it’ll be hard to look past those big, round eyes.
But if you’re looking for a more mature cat that won’t get up to quite as much mischief, an adult cat could be an easier option.
Choose a cat breed
Once you’ve decided whether you want a mature moggie or a cute-as-a-button kitten, it’s time to choose the best breed for your personality, lifestyle and family.
While cats have a reputation for being independent and aloof, all breeds have their own characteristics and temperament, so it’s important to do your research.
Large cat breeds
Big domestic cats aren’t exactly lion-like, but if you’re looking for a cat that’s a little on the larger side, there are plenty to choose from.
Here’s a small selection of the most popular large breeds that could have a big impact on your life:
Small cat breeds
Most domestic cats are fairly small in size. But if you want a cat that’ll always stay as cute as a kitten, you could opt for one of these light-footed felines:
- Abyssinian
- American Curl
- Balinese
- Cornish Rex
- Devon Rex
- Munchkin
- Oriental Shorthair
- Russian Blue
- Siamese
- Singapura
Fluffy cat breeds
Cats might not be as well-known as dogs for being affectionate, but there’s nothing better than snuggling into your fluffy feline.
If you’ve got plenty of time on your paws for grooming and maintenance – these adorable balls of fluff could be the perfect pet for you
Friendliest cat breeds
If you ask us, cats’ reputation for being anti-social couldn’t be further from the truth.
Some of the most popular cat breeds are just as sociable and affectionate as dogs – and can make great family pets. Among the friendliest felines you’ll find:
